Saks Fifth Avenue is an American luxury department store
owned by the oldest commercial corporation in North America, Hudson's Bay
Company. Its main flagship store is
located on Fifth Avenue near Rockefeller center. The store has two sets of windows: windows on the 49th and 50th Street and six
big windows along Fifth Avenue.
The tradition of the holiday windows dates back to the late
1800s when the availability of plate glass windows allowed retailers to build
large windows to display merchandise to draw in customers, giving birth to
"window shopping." This year Saks Fifth Avenue spent the last 12 months and thousands of hours creating this year's holiday windows and producing its annual light show.
Saks' animated center six windows along Fifth Avenue are titled
"The Nutcracker Sweet," and recreate of scenes from Peter Ilyich
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet, a winter-time favorite.
A multicolored 10-story tall light holiday light show run every 10 minutes from 5
PM to 11PM each evening through
New Year’s.
